Staty Hungry, Stay Foolish (part 2) - The concept of Fasting in Hinduism, Islam and other religions... the scientific reasons for fasting!

Fasting known as उपवास in Hindi, is a concept in Hinduism where the devotee keeps himself hungry and or thirsty for few hours or days.

Fasting has been used a tool by sages and ancient rishis in India and the tradition continues till date. The most recent example was Fasting by Anna Hazare. It was used as a tool to protest. This way of protest is called 'Satyagraha' a concept born out of works and actions of the father of the Nation (of India) Mahatma Gandhi. We'll get back to it later.
Most of the religions have the concept of fasting. The month of Ramzaan is a great example which demonstrates the concept of Fasting in Islam.

However, we have forgotten whats its about. People usually think that 'How can by being hungry and thirsty, we can please God?', 'Is God cruel who wants us to suffer?'.

Today I am going to let you know a few things. Fasting is actually Good. Its benefit includes-

1. Long Life! - Scientists have proved by experiments that by eating less we can increase our life-span. If we reduces the calories we consume daily by half, theoretically we can double our life-span.

You might be thinking that the author is crazy. How can being hungry lead to a longer life? Well actually when we consume less calories, body derives its calories from digesting its internal organs. It acts like a kind of cannibal consuming itself. This results is formation of new organs every now and then. We have a new body every few days or so. It doesn't become weak. It gains strength. Also since the organs are regenerated as a faster rate, it actually keeps us younger.

2. Self-Control / Will Power!
- By fasting, we actually practice self-control. We train our mind to be obedient and faithful. We become the master. We achieve great focus and concentration. We develop a great will power.

So basically, fasting is good for health and God doesn't want us to suffer! So if you want to live a longer, happier, healthier and younger life... develop the habit of fasting.

Now coming to 'Satyagraha' and Anna Hazare - he's actually achieving the benefits of Fasting, while the Government felt that its a threat!! Strange isn't it?

I have written this post in a hurry, without proof-reading it. Its bound to have some grammatical mistakes. Please ignore them!
