I am ashamed to call myself an almunus of Birla Institute of Technology Mesra. Want to know Why? Read on...

Yes I am an alumnus of Birla Institute of Technology Mesra. A College/ Deemed University/ Autonomous Institute which was established in 1955 ( 9 years before the inception of BITS Pilani); has 900 acres of Campus with two rivers flowing inside it; and needless to say many 'reputed' alumni have passed out from this 'reputed' institute.

Still, I feel ashamed to be called an alumnus of this premiere institute. You may wonder why? Simply because we - the so called reputed Alumni are basically well... very reputed.

We are too reputed to look back at our college and contribute in its development. Barring a mere 100 or so alumni ( and please note there would have been lakhs of them by now) we never think about the college. We are not bothered about its current state!

Yeah we may all be sharing pics and may be a couple blog-posts about our lives at BIT Mesra but we never ever contribute to its cause. I pity BIT Mesra and its fate - its a institute which has failed to impart basic education to its students. All the pass-outs care about is - now good or bad their life was at BIT Mesra. Hardly anyone contributes anything once they have left the institute.

I remember in my times in BIT Mesra; in the friend circle everybody talked about how BIT Mesra is not good enough for them. How nobody helped them to achieve their dreams. Everyone wanted to get funding from the Alumni and pledged that they would be a better alumni given the chance.

And today I see the same people in very Big companies like Samsung, Microsoft, Google, CISCO, Amazon, Hyundai, Tata Steel, Tata Motors and what not - and what is our contribution - Zip Zilch Nada!

What happened to all those claims? What happened to all those thoughts? Now everybody seems to me like the same people they used to complain about. Talk about Hypocrisy... we BITians are the best examples.

I am trying my bit... I am not sure if that's enough. But I believe I have a duty towards BIT Mesra. I can not ignore it. I will NOT ignore it. I am NOT a hypocrite. Instead of wasting my Sunday in posting stupid stuff on facebook or writing hate messages on Quora - I am going to utilize my time constructively.

I will follow my heart. I will follow the path I have chosen. I will follow the words of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

I know many people will label this blog-post as a Egotist Post for Self-Publicity; but at the same time... the SANE people will understand that it's required to open the eyes of the people. It's necessary to wake them up. It's necessary to bring about a change.

And I am proud to say that I, Vishal Gupta, feel good that I have done my bit for BIT Mesra. I had:

  1. Donated books worth 10000.00 in final year (after all exams were over) to the library.
  2. I never charged any fee for any workshop or session I conducted.
  3. I donated lots of my stuff and cycle and other things to a local family in BIT Mesra - a family of a clerk.
  4. I established Paritraan with the help of some of the best people in BIT Mesra; and I continue to fulfill my duties for Paritraan irrespective of the fact whether the rest of them do or do not do.
  5. I recently contributed 22000.00 to Team Srijan for them to participate in their competition.
  6. I recently contributed 15000.00 to Team Gurutva for them to participate in a NASA competition.
  7. I recently contributed 10000.00 to Shubham Agrawal so that he could carry on his research in Durhum University.

But most important of all... I could inspire Abhinav Omar (my room-mate from 1st year) to do the same. He has contributed 2000.00 to each - Team Srijan; Team Gurutva and Shubham Agrawal. And he doesn't work for any Big Company. Its just that HE HAS A BIGGER HEART. A heart of GOLD!

Lots of respect for you my friend. I am proud to have a friend like you. You have proved once again... that it doesn't need more than intention and willingness to do something for somebody.

And I thank you God - for its because of you and only you - that today I can contribute in others' dreams. I thank you God for giving me a position where I can help people. Thank you for not letting me turn just like any other BIT Mesra Alumni...Thank you very much!

  2. line no. 1 is wrong .. BITS Pilani is way older, estd. in 1901 as school became engg. college in 1946 itself. It was only merged and renamed as BITS in 1964.
About Alumni Association : There has been numerous efforts from Alumni and students side and if i m nt wrong it is the BIT admin n board rather than its children who are responsible. Still BITOSA is doing a good job in some respects. (As the same teams hv been funded heavily by Mr. Subhash Dhar and others in BITOSA summits)
About help : Its really good that u r doing ur bit for the college but underestimating others contribution will be a big mistake. If it has been written with the intention to encourage others its ok else i really disagree with almost all the points except "Be the change u want to see" (being a Gandhian).
A statement from C. K. Rajput(BITian). Give me space(land) inside BIT for a Alumni center and a complimentary laboratory for students. I am ready to sign a cheque of the required value.

    1. To begin my reply- how about this email from Team Gurutva-

      Sir,

I write to you in response to the contribution you made to TEAM GURUTVA.

We are really happy about the fact that you had come forward to help us when we desperately needed some. Also i would like to let you know that the money transferred by Abhinav sir has been deposited into our account. We are really proud to have an alumnus like you.

But still we fall way short of our target budgets.Till now we have received one lakh rupees from various sources like Dept.of science and technology ( sanctioned 50,000rs) , 5000 rs from GRAPHIC TRADES and in bits and pieces from other organizations .Our target budget would be around three lakhs, hence we are still in a deficit of around two lakh rs.

Apart from you and Abhinav sir, none other alumni have come forward to sponsor us despite being approached several times. We work hard here in Gurutva Lab day and night but if monetary help is not provided to us, then we may not be able to represent our University at NASA.It becomes very difficult for all of us to motivate ourselves and move forward.Even the college is showing reluctance in issuing money for our project which is the biggest disappointment so far.BIT MESRA, despite being such a big university is not taking responsibility for this.We are approaching other organizations like NTPC,IOCL,BRADA,SBI Bank etc but none have confirmed their contribution. Also we are running out of time sir as we have to apply for visas and get them done, then book tickets also.

Hence kindly i request you to show us a way to get some more sponsorship help from the Alumuni and other contacts of yours.

      Thanking you sir.

      With regards,
      TEAM GURUTVA,
      BIT MESRA.

That line from the email from Team Gurutva inspired this blog-post. Because sometimes you need to SHOUT and MAKE NOISE to get attention. Just like Bhagat Singh did by bombing the parliament without KILLING anyone.

  3. 1st line wrong:BITS was estd. in 1901 as school, as engg college in 1946 and was only renamed as BITS in 1964.
Regarding Alumni contri. : If ur article is for encouraging others its fine else u r really underestimating the efforts of ur seniors and may be juniors. If i m nt wrong prob is with the Admin/Board of Directors of BIT nt its kids.Still under the name of BITOSA they are doing the best they can.(The same teams got huge funding from Mr. Subhash Dhar and others in Bitosa summit in past years).
C.K.Rajput, Sushil Lohia, etc.(BITian): "Give me land in BIT for construction of an Alumni centre and a complimentary lab for students, i am ready to sign cheque now itself".
K.K. Sinha(BITian from 1st batch 90+ year old) scolded then VC in front of all for rejecting help of Alumni and their initiative for college betterment.
Regarding utilizing time on weekends, Varun Pandey has been doing nothing else than helping BITians unite for past 10 years.
I am not discouraging or criticizing u. U r doing a good job .. but its unfortunate that a person like u is using path of criticism to attain a good thing.
As Gandhi "Path is the Goal" means Path and Goal both are equally important..

    1. Dear AOL Anonymous user. I respect your views and opinion. I will try to provide my opinions about your opnions.

Yes! I know, my opinion is not much important to you as much is yours. So I wont be forcing my opinion on you. But there are a few points I would like to make.

“1st line wrong:BITS was estd. in 1901 as school, as engg college in 1946 and was only renamed as BITS in 1964.”

Thank you for pointing out the mistake. My fault that I did not go through Wikipedia but went through a more reliable source – BITS Pilani’s Website. Please have a look at http://www.bits-pilani.ac.in/bitsFactsHistory which just says that a degree college was established in 1946 without any reference to Engineering. Also I thought we were talking about Universities established not Schools established in 1901. Moreover I did not even think that this mattered.

      -----------------------------------------------------

“Regarding Alumni contri. : If ur article is for encouraging others its fine else u r really underestimating the efforts of ur seniors and may be juniors.”

My article is about getting people to read and think and then ACT. Its not about encouraging or discouraging – it’s just about merely expressing the scenario.

I am underestimating - Am I really? How many alumni can you name who have actually contributed willingly themselves before someone reached out to them for help? 50? 100? 1000? 10000? And how many alumni have graduated from BIT Mesra (including all 28 departments in the Main campus and other departments in the extension centres) - 50000? 100000? 200000? What is the ration? Did I not clearly say that there are very good alumni who are helping (I even mentioned a number – 100)

      ------------------------------------------------

“ If i m nt wrong prob is with the Admin/Board of Directors of BIT nt its kids.Still under the name of BITOSA they are doing the best they can.(The same teams got huge funding from Mr. Subhash Dhar and others in Bitosa summit in past years).”

Ok. Mr Subhash Dhar did good job. Which batch does he belong to? What about alumni of 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 batches?

Are they really doing a good job under BITOSA? All the updates I get is about BITOSA having BITOSA parties, conferences and summits for people who are in Bangalore and Delhi (99% of which already have a more than decent job).
      ---------------------------------------------------

“C.K.Rajput, Sushil Lohia, etc.(BITian): "Give me land in BIT for construction of an Alumni centre and a complimentary lab for students, i am ready to sign cheque now itself".

Hatts of to C K Rajput and Sushil Lohia! I really respect these people. But what actually happened? I need action… not mere promises just by politicians of India.
      -----------------------------------------------------------

“K.K. Sinha(BITian from 1st batch 90+ year old) scolded then VC in front of all for rejecting help of Alumni and their initiative for college betterment.”

I don’t think mentioning this in a public blog is a good idea. VC is the second most respected personality of a University. Also I am not sure why you wrote this.

    2. ----------------------------------------------------

“Regarding utilizing time on weekends, Varun Pandey has been doing nothing else than helping BITians unite for past 10 years.”

That’s a great great initiative. I salute such a personality.

However…How come I never heard of him? May be its all totally my mistake or may be all total my unawareness… or could it be that the targeted audience is only the passed out alumni? Or may be its localised in a region? Also, does uniting mean only having BITOSA parties, conferences and summits for people who are in Bangalore and Delhi (99% of which already have a more than decent job)?
      --------------------------------------------------

“I am not discouraging or criticizing u. U r doing a good job .. but its unfortunate that a person like u is using path of criticism to attain a good thing.”

Just like you’re not discouraging or criticizing me… I am not criticizing any one. I just wrote a blog-post expressing my feelings about the things that I have seen and continue to see.
      -----------------------------------------

"As Gandhi "Path is the Goal" means Path and Goal both are equally important.."

Just because I used a quote by Gandhiji doesn’t mean that I am a Gandhian. Without doubt I respect his teachings. But I also respect Bhagat Singh; Sukhdev; Subhash Chandra Bose and Chandrashekhar Azad. And Bhagat Singh once said – “Bahro aur sote huye logo ko jagaane ke liye dhamaake ki zarurat hoti hai.” [English Translation – Sometimes you need explosives to wake people and /or bring sensation to deaf people]

    3. Ok I may be wrong. I may be a fool in thinking that others are also contributing. But then why would I get the following email from Team Gurutva-

  4. Vishal, Its so nice to read your feelings and your deeds. Will you suggest some way by which more people can be united and contribute in larger ways? We in Ranchi are trying to revive BITOSA and have planned to help present students of BIT for their projects. You have hit the right spot. We the old students must come forward to help enhance the image of BIT and its rating.
Hope to be in touch through our web site, which is under construction. We have to have a stronger network for larger projects. We are working on this aspect.

    1. Dear RP Sir,
Thank you for the appreciation. However, I am not looking for appreciation. I am looking for like-minded individuals to come forward and takes some ACTION. We have had enough Discussions and suggestions. Need something concrete - ACTION.

Sir to my knowledge, the BITOSA website (maintained by BIT Mesra and its BITOSA representative students) has always been in construction. I remember my friend Shahzor Khan working on it. And I also remember him telling me that THAT BITOSA website was actually a complete copy of BITS Alumni Association Pilani - BITSAA.

Frankly speaking I don't know why should it take more than 5 days to design and develop a fully functional website. Incremental changes can be done regularly to add desired features.

It took me just One Day to create Paritraan's Website

    1. Well the thing is. The most Un-humble things you have seen by me have been done by impersonators who used fake FB profiles and similar emails to fool many people including you. I hope you remember a poem/song sent by an email ID vishalguptamsp@gmail.com

My email ID is f4victor@gmail.com and vishal.gupta172@gmail.com

And yes, I agree that in my 3rd year I had become arrogant, but after than I changed. And today in Samsung, I am among the top 10 most admired HR/employee/Friend.

You may ask your batchmates who are currently working in Samsung.

    2. Also people from ACM-BIT-Mesra (yes ACM-BIT-Mesra & not BIT Mesra) always try to twist my words to create some sort of meaning which I never intend.

Also, was it wrong to point out that ACM - BIT Mesra was never actually registered with ACM? And they had been impersonating ACM for last 6-7 years!! All the certificates everyone received were worthless...

Just because I pointed this out... I became target. Well I am not Kejriwal and perhaps never will be, but its kind of similar, Kejriwal being targetted by corrupt politicians and me being targetted by ACM-BIT-Mesra.

And yeah.. BTW.. As a proof I still have email from ACM's Asia Pacific Head that ACM was a fraud club, until pointed it out.

  6. Hi, I have personal stories and stories of Alums in which the BIT Administration has stopped us because of meager issues of ego in some people at a very high position. I met VC a number of times but nothing happened. Ultimately I along with group of Alumni decided to stay away from colleges. I just have one regret that because of ego issues of officials, juniors did not get benefit. Its something that I don't have a great feeling about college - My seniors may not openly say this but we all know that BIT takes Alumni as a liability.

    1. I am sorry if I sound harsh... but what you are talking about are mere lame excuses...

Why do you need help of BIT Admins to do something good for the students?? Why do you need to meet the VC? You just need to make an online transfer of funds and job done!!

I understand that your plans are big... but when you're not successful doesn't it mean that you should try with smaller sub-plans first?

I feel like you (and most of Alumni) are using BIT Administration as an excuse to prove that you've tried all you could, which frankly isn't the case...

  7. Vishal I would agree with you but is it right that some officials at BIT who are at very high position stop Alumni to serve their juniors because of their ego. This is very much painful and now we have decided just to be away from BIT. I would rather serve hundreds of school students and other college students. We the alums don't have a good feeling about college because it takes us a liability. Many seniors may not come in open but this is the truth. I would prefer to interact with students much more but the administration not only stops me but number of alumni on helping them. I would love to share my knowledge with them but if I have to go through 5 visits and number of permissions and handle ego issues of officials, I will prefer to go to other college/school which would much more welcome me.

    1. I don't see the point in you people blaming admin for everything... I am doing it and I am an Example of how things can be done...

Why do you need to approach the BIT Administration if you're donating something to Teams like Srijan and Gurutva??

Why are you people so adamant about using BIT Admins as a middle tier? There's no need.

And I also donated lots of books to the library... none of the BIT Admins stopped me.

I will ask you a simple question... think of your biggest achievement and the obstacles you faced in achieving it. Did you try with the same level of commitment and hard-work with the BIT Admins?
